USNS CESAR CHAVEZ – Naming Navy Ships Sparks Controversy

The Senate has asked the Navy to explain how and why it selects the names of new ships. A provision inserted into the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act calls for a review of the ship-naming process. Ship names are chosen by the secretary of the Navy.

Sen Roy Blunt (R-Mo) introduced the provision in the Senate. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif) is leading the charge in the House. Both legislators believe ships should be named after genuine sea service heroes, if a person is selected.

Several recent selectees prompted the move, especially the naming of a dry cargo ship after Cesar Chavez, co-founder of the United Farms Workers union. Chavez served for two years in the peacetime Navy (1946 – 48), describing them as “the worst two years of my life.”

Hunter feels designating such selectees is “more about making a political statement than upholding the Navy’s history.” He has recommended that the Navy name the next ship after Marine Sgt Rafael Peralta, KIA in Iraq and nominated for the Medal of Honor.

Stolen Valor Acvt – Supreme Court to Hear VFW Case

A VFW-led effort to protect the sanctity of military medals will be heard in the U.S. Supreme Court this spring. VFW and 24 other organizations want the nation;’s highest court to uphold the Stolen Valor Act – A 2006 law that makes it a crime to falsely claim receipt of a medal for valor.

Two federal courts – the Ninth Circuit Cort of Appeals in San Francisco and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver – each ruled in seperate cawes over the last two years that the Stolen Valor Act is unconstitutional. The courts stated that the First Amendment’s free speach protection applies even to lies.

VFW and the other organizations believe those who falsely claim to have earned the Medal of Honor and other prestigious decorations “are taking advantage pof the goodwill associated with those awards,” according to a frief filed in the cawe.

“Lies about military honors take advantage of the public’s trust,” the brief noted. “They alow con men to benefit in innumerable tangible and intangible ways from the virtually inexhaustible reservoir of goodwill, admiratino and honor that military heroes have earned over the past 235 years.”

Since the Stolen Valor Act was enacted in December 2006, an estimated 60 phony veterans have been convicted.

Veterans Need Employment, Jobvite’s Apps For Heroes Helps Them Find It

Veterans Job BankWhen military veterans complete their service, they shouldn’t have to struggle to find jobs. That’s why Jobvite and The White House’s Joining Forces initiative are teaming up to release “Apps For Heroes”. The new feature set allows Jobvite’s recruiting platform clients to check a box and flag the job openings they post to be automatically included in Veterans Job Bank. Clients can also easily add a Veterans Affairs Blue Button to their job application submission forms to allow vets to upload their military service history.

Apps For Heroes was unveiled on January 18, 2012 at a San Francisco event promoting First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden’s Joining Forces initiative to support veterans. Held at the Code For America office, Biden and US CTO Aneesh Chopra will be on hand to discuss how technology can help reduce unemployment, especially for those who’ve served their country.

Jobvite will now give its clients the option to include Apps For Heroes features on their job openings. If they check the box indicating an opportunity is targeted towards veterans, metadata will be added to the job listing so it can be scraped and syndicated on the Veterans Job Bank. Employers are incentivized to participate in Apps For Heroes, as they can receive up to $9,600 per veteran hired thanks to the Returning Heroes and Wounded Warriors Tax Credits.
